Can't open Word 2000

Just today, when I tried to open any Word 2000 document on my PC, the
computer freezes when the Word 2000 box displays, forcing me to restart my
PC. I do not seem to have this problem with other programs. I can copy the
Word files to another computer and open them. I have tried using the original
disc (Works) to repair and reinstall Word without sucess. Any ideas?

Note that reinstalling Word seldom fixes such issues because Word setup
tries to conserve user settings when removing/reinstalling. Ironically,
therefore, removing/reinstalling doesn't fix the very thing(s) that cause
the problem.
