can't open pdf or exe files in IE6

P

Pam

I'm so frustrated - something is preventing me from being able to download
any files or open pdf files in IE 6.0.2800 - I had downloaded new version of
adobe reader 7 and installed that - and it seems after that I couldn't view
any pdf files..so uninstalled that, rebooted - no success in viewing pages
(403 forbidden error) or downloading anything. So went to Internet
options/security and made sure that the run Active X controls and plug-ins
were enabled both on internet and local intranet were checked - my custom
levels are at medium ... but still no luck .. so installed adobe 5 .. still
no luck in viewing pdf files....I don't even know if it had anything to do
with adobe or not...tried to redownload the updated version of adobe 7 but
now can'teven get that page to show ... I am running zonealarm, microsoft
antispyware, and norton antivirus software and AVG free version ... but
can't find anything in those that would alllow me to change any settings for
this...can someone please help me out - I'm going nuts!

thanks
Pam

I suggest you upgrade to the latest IE - you haven't got it.
Current latest version is 6.0.2900.2180

P

Pam

But that's the problem - I can download anything at all - I keep getting
HTTP Error 403 - Forbidden
Internet Explorer

I've tried to upgrade...just keep getting the above - could there be some
security setting or something that is keeping me from being able to
download/view ??

I mean I CAN'T download anything

Hi Pam :)

Try the following and see if it helps:

Safely Delete the Temporary Internet Files
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm

or..print version

Close all instances of OE and IE
Control Panel | Internet Options | General tab
Click the "Delete Files" button
Also click on Delete all off line files

also..

If you have Zone Alarm Pro, check this. If not, ignore:

On the gateway machine, do the following.
Click Start->Run, type cmd and click ok.
Type ipconfig /all and press enter.
Find the connection you are using, and make note of all the DNS servers.
Type exit and press enter.

Double-click the ZA icon down by the clock.
Click firewall>Main, and click the advanced button.
Put the check in "this computer is an ICS/NAT gateway", and click ok.
Click firewall>Zones.

Add each DNS server to the trusted zone. To do this, do the following.
Click the add button, and then click IP address.
Click trusted, put in the IP address, enter a description, and click ok.
When finished adding all addresses, click the apply button.

Next, click program control -> programs. Locate Generic Host Processing.
Under the server column, for trusted, change that to a check.
Don't change server internet to a check, just server trusted.

Please note that this will likely NOT work if you are using the free version
of ZoneAlarm. Support for ICS is one of the perks of going to the Pro/pay
version according to their web site. Older versions I believe will do it for
the freeware versions. If that's your situation I'd Google it and try to
find an older version somewhere.

If sitll no joy, then do the following:

Tools > Internet Options > Advanced > Browsing
Uncheck the Enable 3rd party browser extensions

If this clears your problem then find out who the culprit(s) is/are with
these tools.
Dealing with Unwanted Spyware and Parasites:
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm

You will need to access this information from another computer and download
the necessary programs tools to clean your system

You can also try this:

Be sure you are in Administartor of the computer so your account is not
locked down.
Go to Tools>Internet Options>Security>Custom level>scroll down to Download
section and check the File Download box.
Then go to the Advanced tab>press the "Restore Default" button.

And in Tools>Advanced tab>Security and uncheck "Do not save encrypted pages
to
disk"

Hope this helps :)

I can open them locally on my computer - I just can not open pdf files or
certain pages while on the internet - I get the forbidden page - 403

I'm still trying to download the update for IE 6 (SP1) but it won't allow me
to that page .. sigh.... and I'm way too leary to download/install SP2 as I
already did that and ended up having to reformat my hard drive due to so
many complications...

any other ideas??

thanks

The Yahoo Toolbar has been reported to cause this. If that's not it,
uninstall all versions of Acrobat or Adobe Reader and reinstall from the
Adobe Web site.

this is interesting too - I went to symantec.com to run the virus checker -
I also 'allowed' this site in my custom level for privacy - when I click on
run the virus check - it says that I must have IE 5.0 or higher with active
X and scripting enabled - which I DO???!!! I've checked it over and ovr and
over and I've enabled scripting/java plug ins and downloads in
InternetOptions/tools/security

I also tried housecall - and it gets all the way to the page to actually
start the scan, but where there is supposed to show which hard drive to
choose - nothing shows up in the dialogue box and I can not click on next -

ideas???

ok...this is the problem as far as I can determine - no matter where I go on
the internet to run a security check - and I've tried all the links that
have been listed on this group - it constantly says my security settings are
NOT enabled to run javascript and it seems that I am not running a current
version of IE - in fact some tell me to upgrade to the newest version since
it looks like I am running Ie 3-5 ... BUT I can't get to a downloadealbe
page!!! It keeps saying 403 Forbidden ... how can I get it downloaded?

any ideas??

The plot thickens! It's prolly all related. See below.

(Courtesey of MVP Mike Burgess) Several of these are known to cause
problems:

1) Zone Alarm Pro [Private Header Info - enabled?] Reset "Ad Blocking" and
"Cookie Control" to "medium" "Mobile Code Control" = Off

2) Symantec (ISS\NIS) [Enable Browser Privacy - enabled] Active Content -
"Allow All Scripts To Execute" Problem: some sites cannot detect the 128 bit
encryption Solution: Completely remove and reinstall NIS.

3) Any "ad blocking" software that blocks "http_referer" or contains entries
that are blocking access to the desired site.

4) HOSTS file that contains entries that are blocking access to the desired
site.

5) Cookie blocking software that are blocking "required" Cookies.

6) Pop-up blockers that are stripping header\url info.

7) WebWasher Standard Filter/URL Filter

8) Make sure the following entry is not corrupt:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet
Settings] "User Agent"="Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Win32)"

Note: "Win32" = Windows 98\ME Other versions = (compatible; MSIE 6.0;
Windows NT 5.0;)

Also try deleting Temporary Internet Files, Pam.

I FIXED IT!!!!! YEAH!!!!! ok...I REMOVED norton antivirus 2005 - nothing
happened..so ..held my breath and took of zonealarm (pro - the 15 day trial

put both back on (after hours of downloading!!) - ran the free spyware
checker at za - clear - booted up - set the za security - and bingo
....everything works fine now...sooooo..imho - it had to be zonealarm!!!!

man...all that grief and ranting and raving and throwing myself on the floor
:)...at least I resisted the urge to throw the d___ thing out the window!
LOL

If I hadn't done all of the above, I would have read your note and probalby
started with ZA as you suggested - I'm hoping I have enough security without
Norton antivirus on my ssystem - I hve AVG, Microsoft spyware, and Zone
Alarm - think I'm ok?

...it had to be
zonealarm!!!!

It had to be NAV, rather. It was prolly NAV's Script Blocking that caused
the problem, Pam. (Hope you can get a refund.)

You should be fine with AVG7, MS AntiSpyware Beta (<=note!) and ZA, yes.

Glad to hear you were able to resolve your problem. I'm sorry that you
didn't see the Zone Alarm Pro information I posted in my reply to you back

Thank you for letting us know what worked for you, and for the benefit of
