Can't open NOTEPAD

L

Leo Kerner

I cannot open NOTEPAD, either existing files or a new one.
Last significant thing I did was to to a virus scan with Macafee. It
found trojans that it could not clean and direct me to delete them or
quarantine them. After checking what they were- nothing that rung a
significant bell- I deleted what I could and quarantined the rest.
Can someone offer help?

Clean up all this nefarious software. Then try a repair install of XP
.... but with this level of damage I'd consider a clean install of XP to
start afresh. No way of telling all the damage done.

Hope this is useful to you. Let us know.

Thanks... I need more detailed help.
- Clean what nefarious software, and how?
- How do I go about re-installing XP? Is it enough to insert the disc
and follow instructions? Will the process damage my files?
Thanks...

I can't tell you how to clean up as I have no relevant experience, thank
gooodness. Only that the right tools are Norton/Macafee and Ad-aware
and equiv. Follow instructions provided by those vendors.

There are many articles on Microsoft's Knowledge Base (KB)
(www.microsoft.com/support or search KB in "help") which describes how
to do re-installs and repair re-installs. I suspect it also described
in the paper work that came with your XP? YOu can search "help" for
"repair XP" and get a lot of information.

There have been hundreds of prior postings on this same topic posted
here previously giving more step-by-steps. See these, but frankly the
matarial already at your disposal (help and in KB) should be enough.

Finally, you can see how to do this in some of the books on XP available
in the bookstores. TAke a look and find one that you like.

Hope this is useful to you. Let us know.
