Can't open IE

Hi
I haven't been able to open IE on Windows XP for a few days now. It says that "IE has encountered a problem and needs to close." I did everything I possibly knew of to fix it. I installed all the windows updates and it didn't fix the problem. I tried uninstalling the program through the control panel and then re-installing it from the Windows XP cd, and it didn't work. I tried installing IE 6.0 from the microsoft web site and it says "A newer version of this program already exists on this computer," even though I have uninstalled it already. Please help. Thank you.

First eliminate any scumware.

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each needs to be updated before every use, even when just
downloaded. There's also a lot more to do than just those two programs.
