Can't Open Files Within XL

Hi all,
Here's the issue: I can double click xls files on my local or server drive
which launches XL and I can interact with the doc just fine.

If I try to use the Open option on the standard menu, or if I try to use
Ctrl-O, or if I go to File/Open, XL locks up and hangs. The only way to get
out of it is to use Task Manager, End Process - and I recieve the "Send
Report" message to Microsoft.

Here are the specs:
Microsoft Excel 2002 (XP) with Service Pack 3 installed (actually, all
updates have been done)
Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2
Dell Dimension 4500
2.4Ghz Pentium 4 with 1GB of RAM

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much in
