Can't open files in Excel or Word

I am unable to open files in Word or Excel from the application. It just
hangs and gives me the hourglass. When I check it on the Windows Task
Manager, it says not responding?

Any ideas as to what it could be? Would reinstalling the apps work? Thanks.
