Can't open certain attachments in Windows Mail

Some of the attachments will not open for me. I get a message: This file
does not have a program associated with it for performing this action.
Create an association in the Set associations control panel. I do not know
how to do this. Can any help me?

What type of attachment file is it, DOC, PPS, JPG, XLS?

Can you save the attachment, and then open the saved document
outside of Windows Mail?
