Can't open apps after establishing dialup connection

A while ago I posted this problem a couple times, and it was suggested I
look into Firewall issues. I have altered settings, reinstalled,
uninstalled, and completely removed all 3rd party firewall software,
antivirus apps, etc., and the problem remains identical. Since my posting,
several people have emailed me asking if anyone came up with a solution, as
they are having the same problem. Details follow:

I have seen this EXACT problem referenced in Linux newsgroups, but I am on
XP.

New box, factory-installed Windows XP Pro, Office XP Pro, got all the
updates for both.

On bootup, everything fine. Once I use my dialup (AT&T Worldnet) to
connect to Internet, as soon as the connection is made, I can't launch
ANY applications. Dbl-clicking icons on desktop starts little
hourglass, hourglass goes away after about 4 seconds, no app opens.
Same when trying to launch from Start->Programs. Cntrl-Alt-Del does
same thing, shows little hourglass, but the process/app/resource box
doesn't come up. NO application of any kind can be started.

Worthy of note:

- Any application that I started BEFORE dialing up continues to run
fine once online, just can't open NEW ones.
- This problem is very specifically described in the Linux newsgroups,
and the solution is apparently to set KPPP (whatever that is) option
"Autoconfigure Hostname from IP" to NO (uncheck). I have no idea what
equivalent this would be in Windows XP, except for maybe "obtain IP
address automatically" in the TCP/IP properties, but this needs to be
set to YES, I think, because of the nature of ISP's (I could be wrong
here)

Please please please help, this problem is insane, this is a brand
spanking new system, and I can't believe I'm having these kinds of
problems so early in the game. AT & T, surprise surprise, is of NO help

Any help is greatly appreciated, and thanks.

Hi Newbie,

How do you connect to the Internet. Is the dialer from ATT or the
native XP Dialer?

If it is ATT software, it might be that it is interfering with normal
functioning.
I would suggest uninstalling this software, if this is the case, and
create a new connection to your ISP.
To do this you would need to know the telephone number, account name
and password, and DNS of your ISP. This consist of four set of
numbers, like 124.233.34.43.

You could contact ATT and have them tell you this information, so you
can manually create a dial up connection using XP's native software,
so you don't have these troubles.

Like you, I use dial up to connect to the net, and it performs
flawlessly, better than in Windows 98.

Good luck

Brand spanking new? I'd be calling the free computer support from the
manufacturer and complain. It's still under warranty, and something ain't
right, especially if this has been going on from the get go.

This problem seems to also effect the native XP Pro Version 5.1.2600 Service Pack 1 Build 2600 dialup connection
I have tried to uninstall & reinstall modem drivers, rebuild dialup connections, disable native firewall & rearm, all to no avail
I beleive that it is not an AT&T or AOL issue, I think it is an OS problem on one of the updates
