My computer has adeveloped a problem with tif files was ok up to a week ago.

If I create a Tif file by any method: save as in photoshop cs,From a
scanner. or import.
I can not move it from its present location.I get the message:

Can not move xxxxxx it is being used by another user or program
close any programs that might be using the file and try again.

If I restart the computer it lets me move one file only which can contain
tif's and than won't let me move any more and I get the same message.

Have tried in safe mode with same result.

I dont have a problem with other file types, jpg Psd etc. But as I have many
hundred tif's this is a real problem.

Any Ideas. any one.

My computer is an xpc shuttle running Xp2. has a pentium 3.4 processor and 1
gig memory. 300gb hard disk.

Sorry, no solid ideas.

Questions for you, just in case they lead to some clues:

1. Does this happen regardless of which folder the files are in?
2. If you double click on a file, who opens it?
3. Are there any applications running, as seen in MSCONFIG?
4. What processes are showing under MSCONFIG?
5. Are you able to COPY (as opposed to MOVE) the file?

Hi bxf

Here are answers to the questiones you posed

1. Does this happen regardless of which folder the files are in? Yes
2. If you double click on a file, who opens it?
Viewprint
3. Are there any applications running, as seen in MSCONFIG? see below
4. What processes are showing under MSCONFIG? see below
5. Are you able to COPY (as opposed to MOVE) the file? yes

I can also change the format or work on them in photoshop and do a save as.
but the origional still is stuck, clogging up the works.
If I save as another Tiff it is also stuck whereever I file it.

I'm afraid none of the processes that I'm familiar with look suspicious
to me, not that I know them all.

Since you are able to EDIT the files in PS, one would think that it is
PS that is locking the files, that is assuming that another editor
would NOT be able to edit. That is logical, but I don't really believe
it's as simple as that.

Have you tried to rename the file (change the extension) and then move
it? Could be a workaround till you find the real cause. Also, I believe
there are some tools that enable you to do a mass rename.

(Going home time for me. Perhaps some of the info here will trigger
something in somebody's mind).

Terry,

I found this, which may or may not be relevant, so you may want to have
a look:

http://groups.google.com/group/24ho...R+rename)+files&rnum=6&hl=en#5d8e036920f5f4ee

You say your problem started about a week ago, so I would think that,
in the absence of a real solution, rather than trying to find a
work-around it may be best for you to use SYSTEM RESTORE to go back to
some point preceding the first occurrence of the problem, and take
things from there. If it recurs after installing something then at
least you can pinpoint the responsible product.

Good luck.

I forgot to ask. Just out of curiosity, if you copy the files to
another location, will the new files also have the same problems? And
if you copy the entire folder? And finally, you cannot delete the fles,
but can you delete the folder (after copying it first, obviously)?

Use oh.exe from the windows 2003 resource kit tools http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...69-57ff-4ae7-96ee-b18c4790cffd&displaylang=en

Type
oh +otl
reboot
then
oh /t file <filename>
or leave filename blank to see all.

EG to see what program has inbox.dbx open (OE's inbox file)

oh /t file inbox.dbx
which returns

//
// TIME: 2004-03-30 19:50
// MACHINE: SERENITY
// BUILD: 2600
// OH version: built by: dnsrv_dev(v-smgum)
//
//
00000CF0 msimn.exe File 050c \Documents and Settings\David Candy\
Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{E6E1A8F2-C885-46A5-975E-94A4A1F8C788
}\Microsoft\Outlook Express\Inbox.dbx

[Microsoft Internet Mail And News (MSIMN.EXE) is the real name of Outlook Express rather than the marketing name. Office's Outlook internet features is a copy of Outlook Express. OL stole OE's code while OE got OL's name.]

Programs that are executing can't be deleted but can be renamed. Useful to know for programs that start automatically, rename it and windows won't be able to find it next boot.

Hi
Will this be a permanent fix or will I have to do it every time I want to
move a tif file or a folder with tif files in it.

as it is now. if I move ,rename or delete a tif as soon as I turn on the
computer it works. but then starts refusingwith any tif file.
Thanks Terry.

not the folder or tif files
Terry

Neither, it's a diagnostic tool.
