Can't move contacts to new PC

Trying to move contacts to new PC running Outlook 2007 and Windows Vista
Ultimate (64 bit) from old PC running Windows XP Pro (32 bit). Have been
unable to complete the transfer. Copied "pst" file from old machine to
transfer drive and then tried to import into Outlook on new machine. Get a
message that says essentially, " Access denied. You do not have permission
to acces the file." Have checked and the file I am trying to import is not
"Read only".

Appreciate any ideas on how to get the contacts transferred.

As posted at least once a day in all the Outlook groups - do NOT use the
import function to transfer native Outlook data from one instance to
another.
In Outlook do File-Open-Outlook Data File and navigate to where you put it.

Importing an entire PST may well corrupt your profile and may create a ghost
PST that you can't close. Importing PST's will lose:
1. Custom Forms
2. Custom Views
3. Connections between contacts and activities
4. Received dates on mail
5. Birthdays and anniversaries in calendar
6. Journal connections
7. Distribution Lists

Opening a PST file will preserve all of these. That is why we do not advise
people to import a native file into Outlook.

Thanks for responding. Sorry to seem like such a novice, but I had never
viewed this Board before and had used the process of ttransferring the pst
file to the new machine before and it worked fine.

I'm afraid I am in trouble as you indicated I might be. I re-copied the
original pst file and went to new machine to open as you instructed and
nothing happens. I tell it to "open" the file and then give it the location
and the screen blinks, but nothing else happens. I don't know what to do
from here. Appreciate any ideas.

You are trying to open the file from within Outlook?

Yes, trying to open from within Outlook. I even tried to open the file
after creating a new Outlook Profile with the same results. zippo!

Have you tried running scanpst.exe on the file?

Thanks for sticking with me. I really thought I was more computer literate
than this.

I think I have almost fixed my problem, but still have one issue. Maybe you
have some ideas, but if you are tired of messing with me, just say so and I
will completely understand.

I finally got the entire Outlook.pst file from my old machine transferred
over to the new machine and I can see all contacts, e-mail and calendar items
in the new machine. The outlook.pst file transferred was 18,369KB.
Previously I was only transferring the "backup.pst" file created when I
exported my contacts to a file. Perhaps that is why previous attempts were
unsuccessful. I think I had misunderstood you previously and you were
telling me to transfet the entire outlook.pst file. I didn't import. I just
transferred the file in it's entirety to the new PC and the default location
(C:\user\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook).

The remaining issue I have is that I have 2 outlook.pst files in the default
location noted above and I am unable to delete them. I get a message that
"they cannot be deleted as they are in use". I created these files
previously when I created 2 new Outlook Profiles trying to get previous
attmpts to work. I had changed the name of these files prior to transferring
the full Outlook.pst file that is now working so as to avoid file conflicts.
I thought it would be good order to go back and delete these files since they
are serving no useful purpose. However, as noted, I am unable to delete
them. I don't know why they would be "in use". Any ideas?

With Outlook closed, go to Control Panel-Mail-Data Files. Remove the two
files you don't want to see in the profile there. (That won't physically
delete them, it will just "unmark" them as being in use by Outlook). You can
then use Windows Explorer to physically delete them.

I didn't import. I just
transferred the file in it's entirety to the new PC and the default location
(C:\user\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook).

Since Gordon didn't say it, I will. This isn't a good idea. If you overwrite
a PST that's in a mail profile, you'll corrupt the mail profile. You should
copy PSTs to a folder that doesn't contain a PST, but copying it to the
default folder is OK provided there's no PST with the same name alreday there.
