Can't make my second display work after installing XP Home Edition

I have just installed XP Home Edition, on my Old Compaq Evo N200 Notebook.
But after doing so, I cannot make my 2. display (Compaq TFT 5015) work. The
display works fine during sartup. It displays boot information, as well as
Windows XP startup screen, but as soon as it shall display the desktop the
display turns black, and goes into sleep mode. The display works fine on my
other Windows XP computer. The funny part is, that when i enter the display
control Panel the Panel registers that there are more displays conencted to
the computer, but it doesn't display the second screen in the setup tab, so i
cannot activate it. Does any one have a good idea about hove to make it work?

go into safe mode and set the resolution and refresh rate lower, then reboot
into normal mode

Hii, you can do two things here try booting in safemode if got display then
do a drivers install/fix and its done. else u need to have a boot disk or
windows cd u can gain access to dos without booting into windows then do the
following changes in ur boot.ini file
u will see a line similar to this:
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP
Professional" /NOEXECUTE=OPTIN /FASTDETECT add "/ BASEVIDEO" in the end of
it it shd look like this:
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP
Professional" /NOEXECUTE=OPTIN /FASTDETECT /BASEVIDEO

this will make u login with ur windows with basic video options, install new
compatable video drivers and settings, revert the changes done to boot.ini
(open it in notepad c:\boot.ini & remove /BASEVIDEO) or u can do it from
msconfig boot.ini settings. remove the changes to boot.ini reboot and done!

Hope this helps....,

Hello John

The monitor is working in safe mode, and i'm able to reduce the resolution,
but not the refresh rate. I can set it to standard mode though. But whenever
I restart the machine the problem returns. I have tried three different
resolutions without solving the problem.

Hii. It did help me, but didn't actually solve the problem. It seems to be
the driver that Windows fetches for the build in graphics card that causes
the problem, whenever i removes this driver and uses the build in VGA driver
it works, But the system recognizes the graphics card when rebooting, and
fetches the driver, hich means that it doesnt work whenever rebooting again.
I have tried the ATI homepage, but it doesn't seem like they have a never
driver than the one installed woth the system. Is there any way I can prevent
the system from using the old ATI driver permanently?

You need the correct winxp driver from Compaq, not ATI, specific to your
notebook.
Either you or win has installed the wrong driver. You should not rely on win
to install its default drivers.
Laptop graphics/vid drivers are supplied by the PC manu NOT graphics chip
manu.

To elaborate; last time I visited ATI site, when I had an ATI card, there
was a specific notice that ATI did not supply drivers or support drivers for
Laptop on board vid chipsets.
The same applies to nvidea.

Yes.... this does not apply to the OMEGA drivers..
Those are what I was talking about.

Let me recap:
first of all get the cat uninstaller to get rid of the old drivers.
1st choice: get the drivers for your laptop from the website support of your
laptops manufacturer.
2nd choice if the 1st one does not exist, use the omega drivers that work
with cards and on board chips.

Advice: make some a restore point before you do all this
