Can't logon via Remote Desktop to newly installed Win2K server

This must be really really obvious but I haven't found it so far.

A colleague has just installed a fresh Win2K server. It's not in
any domain so far, a completely standalone machine. He installed
Terminal Services in remote admin mode.

He can log in as the administrator at the console just fine.

But neither he nor I (from another office via a lan to lan VPN)
can log in from our XP boxes via Remote Desktop. We get the
login prompt OK but it rejects the password.

I've seen this before, when connecting to a brand new XP machine
remotely, and I never found the reason then either.

TS can be a real pain in the *ss sometimes..but you should check the following:

- under what credentials are you trying to logon to the TS server?
- check the local security policy if access from the network is denied
- users in the w2k server have rights to login in TS?

as far as the XP issue, there is a local security policy that denies remote
connection by default, which usually causes the connection problem. You can
see this policy in: administrative tools>local security policy>local
strategy>users rights
