I am using Windows 2000 (Version 5.0, Service Pack 4) and
for some reasons I just can't logoff anymore. This only
happened just now. If I login and then logoff there are no
problems but if I login again and then want to logoff it
doesn't work! I have performed a virus check using the
newest definitions and obviously my computer is clean. Can
anybody help? Thanks!

Need to get a bit of clarification on your statement; "If I login and then
logoff there are no problems but if I login again and then want to logoff it
doesn't work!"
Does this mean that you can logon, do some work, then logoff ok, wait "X"
amount of time then logon again, and at that point you can't logoff?
What time periods between these logon/logoff.
What do you mean when you say logoff "doesnt' work"? Do you get errors in
the event logs, machine freezes up, pop up messages saying somethings not
working or problems, etc.

OK, I'll try to be clearer:
Does this mean that you can logon, do some work, then logoff ok, wait "X"
amount of time then logon again, and at that point you
can't logoff?

Exactly. I logon, do some work, logoff, wait for X = 5
seconds, then logon and now I can neither logoff nor
shutdown. When I select the menu item start -> shutdown or
start -> logoff nothing happens. It's as if I had not
selected the item. When I check the task manager with ctrl-
alt-del there are no hanging tasks and no suspiciously
looking processes. Even with ctrl-alt-del, selecting
shutdown or logoff does not do anything. (may be the
buttons are labelled differently, I am using Win2000 in
German)

Thanks

I wish I had a good answer for you on that, but from what you're explaining
I'm afraid that I don't. Only things I can suggest to consider was if
anything was added, changed, installed, re-configured, etc just prior to
this behavior starting to happen. Test with disabling some services etc
like AV or 3rd party stuff to see if that makes any difference, or if
waiting more than 5 sec or so to logon again makes a difference.
