I've been fighting a recurring problem with my computer not booting correctly and having to reboot in safe mode. Frequently, the safe mode boot locks after (or while) loading mup.sys, although it sometimes boots successfully. After modifying the boot.ini file via msconfig to load the basevideo option, the computer sometimes (but not always) reboots successfully. I've loaded current video drivers and bios updates. I finally decided to do a repair install of XP. After completing the repair install, I am unable to successfully complete a normal boot operation, but can complete a safe mode boot. However, when I try to login with any of the accounts (including the built-in admin account), I get an error that I can't login until I have activated XP, and that XP activation isn't supported in safe mode, so I should reboot in normal mode.
So, I can't boot in normal mode until I get into safe mode to run msconfig, and I can't login in safe mode until I get into normal mode to activate XP. Any ideas?
