Hi everyones. Thanks a lot to read. I was "forced" to install
Internet Explorer 6.0 after a reinstall of windows 98,because Microsoft
doesn't support anymore IE 5.5. I had the IE 5.5 install file in my
backups, but after about 20 seconds of download (the installer
downloads the necessary files) the dowload interrupted all the time.
By using the original old Internet Explorer 4.0, i've checked and discovered
that Microsoft do not offer IE 5.5 to download anymore so i then assumed
that it was the reason why the installer failed to download the necessary file
to install IE 5.5 I then choosed by obligation the 6.0 version. Now here's the
problem with it: I can't acess FTP site for my web hosting at Sympatico
(Canadian ISP). I have "The page cannot be displayed" error each time. A
friend operates a small FTP server with servU FTP Server and he gave me
some space last year. Also there, i have the same problem! I've found the
following article on the Microsoft's knowledge base:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;328785

I did what they suggest...but without any results. Any suggestions? TIA

Ftp servers can be cantankerous. Sometimes a fire wall
can kill it, or even a popup ad killer. In Xp, the
personal firewall kills my ftp. Also, routers can block
the ftp port, 20 or 2,1 and that can take a-lot of time
fix. You have to forward the port, and drink coffee to
get it done. This is not the case for you, if you want I
explor 5.5 go to www.5star-
shareware.com/Internet/BrowsersWWW/BrowsersWWW1.html
or a Canadian site http://helpdesk.uvic.ca/how-
to/support/win95/msiexpl.html perhaps it is from the
failed install that your ftp access fails. Hope you can
fix it, I know how it feels to have no access to your
ftp.

Hi Dallas. And thanks for the reply. No i'm not behind an
harware or software firewall and don't use proxy server.
Besides of what i've tried in the Microsoft's KB, i also
found somewhere that some people solved the problem by
going in the security options>custom level and at the bottom
in the "user authentication" section, the correct setting should
be "prompt for user name and password" or "automatic logon
only in intranet zone" (my default setting was "Anonymous logon").
This did not worked for me, even after a reboot of Windows.

If i don't find something else tomorrow, ill revert back to IE5.5 sp2
if i can find the full version. BTW, thanks for the links but they only
offer the small 500Kb installer that, when executed, downloads the
necessary files for installation. But since Microsoft doesn't offer
anymore 5.5, they removed at the same time those files that the
installer uses. After about 20 seconds, the installer stops downloading!

Thanks a lot for the reply. Robert...the article
# 299893 in Microsoft's knowledge base is THE ANSWER.
The Graphical FTP Helper was probably not installed because
after reinstalling Windows98 (yes, it's the 1st edition!) i thereafter
upgraded from the original 4.0 version to 6.0 sp1, and since
this IE enhancement was introduced with IE 5.0 but is no longer
included with 6.0 , that's the reason why i was unable to correctly
browse FTP sites. I've found the full version of IE5.5 (84Mb)
there: http://browsers.evolt.org/?ie/32bit I think i'll stay anyway with
IE5.5 since the computer behaves much better now...but i bet that if
i would upgrade now to 6.0, then the web folders functionality would be
preserved.
