Can't log on to a fresh XP install

Just got my new hard drive in the other day, and installed Windows XP Home on
it.

Problem is that for some reason it assigns my user account a password and I
have no idea what it is or how to get around it. If I try to guess the
password or just enter no password at all, I get the following error:

"The system cannot log you on due to the following error:

The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted."

Now, I'm not connected to a network or server or anything, so I don't know
what could be causing this. I've tried repairing the Windows installation,
and I've tried doing a complete reformat of the hard drive and installing
Windows brand new. I don't know what else to try...

A Guest account is created as well, but it has the same problem.

How can I run memtest if i can't log on to install anything?

Can I take my laptop somewhere where someone can look at it and try to
determine what the problem is?
