can't log in?

hi i have just purchased a new windows xp..i can log into windows explorer but when i try and log into messenger it won't sign me in,i appear off-line...many thanxs in advance ..andrew
 
You can't log into messenger using your windows account. You should apply a
passport from microsoft first.
