can't log in from win95 to a DC

Hi,

I have a LAN with some old win95 computers all with permanent IP. I can ping
from/to those win95 from/to the DC (win2000 server) even with the netbios
name. The domain name is 'test.be' and the netbios name of the DC is
'pen1800'. I defined a domain user name 'test' on the DC. The DNS server
service is started on the DC and i put into the computer list of DNS one
win95 as host with its netbios name 'pro180'. On the win95, i installed the
client software of Directory service. On the win95, i indicated in the
TCP/IP properties the DNS host as 'pro180' and as domain 'test.be'.
In the properties "client for Microsoft-networking", i took the option "log
to a Window NT-domain with name 'test.be'.

When i try to log from the win95, i give the username 'test' with password
and domain 'test.be' and i get: "no domain server was available to validate
your password".
When i try from the win95 to search a computer with Search/computer, i give
the name 'pen1800' and i get it, but when i click on Network/entire network,
i get "cannot search the network; see help ..."

From the DC, when i try to manage the computer 'pro180' from 'entire
network/directory/computers', i get: "computer \\pro180 cannot be managed.
The specified server cannot perform the requested operation".

Any idea what i did wrong or forgot to do ...?
Thanks
frank

Is NetBIOS over TCP/IP set on the server?
Is WINS installed?

95 only uses TCP/IP as a transport for NetBIOS. Even though 9x, ME and NT
list TCP/IP as a network protocol, it's really NetBIOS over TCP/IP. If
NetBIOS over TCP/IP is installed enabled on the W2K server, you'll never get
there. WINS will help to collect and manage names for NetBIOS. DNS is for
mapping FQDNs (host.domain.com) and has nothing to do with NetBIOS names.
