Can't load win2k on drive

Wayne B.

Could someone let me know what it is that I need to do get
win2k loaded on an older system. (Dell W/P1) I've FDISK
and FORMAT'd the drive. (2.5gig) When i start it up, I get
either hard disk controller 1 failure, with a command
prompt after that, OR invalid system disk, replace disk
and hit f1 to continue or f2 to go to setup.
ALSO, I've been in the BIOS several times and
everything that i tried that i feel would make sense for
the system to c the cd rom drive doesn't work. The way i'm
understanding it is that it's not recognizing the
secondary controller. Everytime that i plug in either the
HD or the cd drive into the secondary, in the bios, it
detects nothing. Setting the cd rom as slave on the
primary with the HD as master doesn't work either.
After going through the 4 setup disks I get a blue
screen with wording on it about i cant go any further
(cannot remember what it says and im not close to it right
now) I KNOW,....SAD

All i'm trying to do is get this thing going so I can
add it to my (mini) domain at home to gain experience. I
just need it to be seen on my network, nothing major.
Should I just junk it or is there any hope??
Any type of advice would be more than welcome for this
rookie.
THANX N ADVANCE Wayne B.

There is no need to try all the combinations. Only one is correct. :) Check
the documentation that came with your hardware and or check the hardware
manufacturer's web site for instructions on jumper placement.

The HD that I have is a used one. So I have no
documentation at all, and also the reason that I was
trying all the jumper positions is because there is no
illistration on the drive that shows which is the master,
cable select and slave. And I was trying other drives when
I couldn't get anywhere with the 2.5gig., and going back
and forth from the primary to the secondary. So that's
what I meant by all the different combinations. :) I'll
look into the Maxtor websight and C what I can find out.

Hey Dave, I've gone that route too. Tried all the
combinations that's humanly possible. That's Y I was
sometimes getting one message and at other times getting
the other one. ???????????

Good news, and bad news...

The jumper is PROBABLY in the correct position when it
tells you that it's not a system disk. I'm stuck at that
point too right now, and I'm sure my drive is functioning
properly. Or rather, nothing has changed on it since I had
to format it.

I then made an MS-DOS boot disk, but it won't run the
Win2000 set-up program, because it claims it cannot run
the file from DOS. So now I'm trying to find the steps to
load WIN2000 from DOS.. for some reason I figured it
would be an issue that comes up a LOT, like after a drive
format, but I can't seem to find anything on the topic.

There's something about using a windows boot disk, but I
was unable to make one because the drive was formatted
before I got the installation CD.. I can look at the CD,
now that I've run the MSCDEX, but can't find what I need.

At least, not yet.

Good luck,
Mike
