Can't load Excel 97 macros in Excel 2002 - hangs/stops responding

I have a substantial number of macro routines that were
written and run fine in Excel 97. They seem to work as
well in Excel 2000. However, when we try to run the
workbook in Excel 2002, the workbook loads but, when we
click on the VBA editor or any of the 5 buttons that are
embedded on a sheet, Excel hangs and stops responding.
Does anybody know how to fix this problem or what might be
causing it?
