Hi,

I am trying to reload XP from my recovery disc, but it wont work.

Laptop tells me to type d: then setup when D: appears, but all I get is a
message saying "This program cannot be run in DOS mode."

Computer is an IBM T22 thinkpad, and OS is windows XP professional.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Phil.

Hi Phil,

The Recovery CDs supplied by the PC manufacturer, formats the hard disk and resets to factory defaults by re-imaging the drive with the image in CD (thereby erasing all the data in the drive). That means, Windows cannot be reinstalled selectively using a OEM supplied Restore / Recovery CD. To learn about the recovery process for your notebook, the best option is to contact IBM technical support.

OTOH, if you have a 'retail' Windows XP CD-ROM, refer to the following MVP site which explains how to perform a Clean/Repair installation of XP: http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/
