I am trying to install XP Pro on this computer that had windows 98 with no
luck it tells me i am missing mfc42u.dll, mlang.dat, &mmc.exe.
I tried to install w2K But told me tffsport.sys is corrupted, I installed it
before & wasn 't corrupted. So I finally got windows 98 installed and thats
it. Any ideas.
It is a Intel Pentium II with MMX Technology [Which is???] 8GB HDD and 96 mb
ram
Thanks for any feedback

Youre hardware is probably the reason,8gb hd is borderline on size,96mb
of ram defiently is,microsoft has 128mb as min,and really 256 is too
low,512mb
will get it running ok.P2 maybe,is this computer from a museum or an antique
mall......

If you run the hardware compatibility wiz, it's a90% chance your
H/W won't cut the mustard.
Time for a new system, or stay with Win98.

Stick with Windows 98 and deal with it. Otherwise, you're
asking for trouble . . . 96Mb of RAM is NOT enough for
Windows XP

Problems copying files or corrupted files during installation are
most often caused by defective or sub-standard hardware; in order of
likelihood, either RAM, the hard drive, or the motherboard.

Have you made sure that your PC's hardware components are capable
of supporting WinXP? This information will be found at the PC's
manufacturer's web site, and on Microsoft's Windows Catalog:
(http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/hcl/default.mspx) Additionally, run
Microsoft WinXP Upgrade Advisor to see if you have any incompatible
hardware components or applications.

You should, before proceeding, take a few minutes to ensure that
there are WinXP device drivers available for all of the machine's
components. There may not be, if the PC was specifically designed for
Win98/Me. Also bear in mind that PCs designed for, sold and run fine
with Win9x/Me very often do not meet WinXP's much more stringent
hardware quality requirements. This is particularly true of many
models in Compaq's consumer-class Presario product line or HP's
consumer-class Pavilion product line. WinXP, like WinNT and Win2K
before it, is quite sensitive to borderline defective or substandard
hardware (particularly motherboards, RAM and hard drives) that will
still support Win9x.

I have also seen it happen with older video card drivers.
