One cannot upgrade from one language version of Windows to a
different language version. Either purchase an "Italian Retail Upgrade
Version" of Windows XP, or purchase a "Full English Version" of
Windows XP and perform a "clean install".

You can not upgrade from one language to another language.

Back-up all important data
I am not sure if this will work...
Perform a Clean Install of Windows XP (you can do a Clean Installation
with a Windows XP upgrade CD)
When requested, insert the windows 98 CD:
http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/cleanxp.htm
This will work if both are the same language.
But I am not certain if qualifying media needs to be the same since it
is not being installed.

You cannot upgrade or convert from one language version of the OS
to another, so you'll have to purchase and use the full version of
English WinXP to perform a clean installation.

Or get hold of an English CD of Win98 to present to Setup as evidence
when it asks where Windows is on a clean install
