Can't Install WinXP Home

Having recently acquired a second hand computer, I can't re-install the
OS. although I can install WinXP Pro & a few Linux versions, I can't
install the OEM WinXP Home which is the licensed copy for that computer.

When I try to install XP Home, it reaches the final stage before the
first break & I get the BSOD error:

stop: 0x0000007E (oxc0000005, 0xf95940bf, 0xf99e0208, 0xf99dff08)

pci.sys - Address f95940bf base at f958d000, DateStamp 3b7d855c

This BSOD comes from installation from the CD & the last boot disc if I
use them.

The tech guides are no help. Can anyone suggest how to proceed?

Hi:

I am not sure if it is the same case but give it a try:

"STOP 0x0000007E" error message after you upgrade to Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/330182/en-us

You receive a stop error 0x7E in Pci.sys
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/839641/en-us
Thanks Juan, the first link almost addresses my problem, however my BSOD
happens as the installation is starting windows, before the first
re-boot. That is all device drivers should be loaded.

It's a clean install on a 40 Gb HDD.
I have no PCI devices
256 mb RAM is serviceable
BIOS date is 2006

XP Pro installs with no issues.
Slackware (Linux) 11.0 installs with no issues

I'm still none the wiser.

Hi:

I will try the following:

1-Check with the manufacturer of your computer of motherboard that you have
the latest BIOS version.
2-Setup your BIOS in the most default or compatible state, that you can.
3- Call me "nuts", but try a new copy of your Windows XP version, even a
"copy" from a friend for testing purposes.. If your copy of XP Pro work
fine, it is suspicious for me that the one from home doesn´t work...
4-Another step, try to use another memory modules that you may have avail or
borrow. Windows xp just need 64 MB minimum, but 128 MB recommend. Personaly
I will try with 512 in you can.

I have not more ideas, sorry. Let me know please, if you are successful.

I would like to add that if you try to install a 'branded' OEM version
of XP, you may encounter this. Branded OEM are version that are for
specific computer makes (HP, Dell, Compaq, Gateway etc..) If you try
to install on different hardware, un-predictable results will occur.
