Can't install Windows Update!!!

I believe I have a virus. Here are some problems I have been having:

Computer freezes without warning--more frequently when Norton Realtime Virus Protection is open

I cannot install windows updates because I receive a message saying it is not Microsoft Certified software. Same applies when I've tried to install Comcast Security software

I've tried using Spybot, Adware, Stinger but it doesn't remove it. Norton Antivirus Software usually does not make it through a scan without the computer freezing.

Also, I can't use System Restore because my computer froze when I tried previously and does not restore now.

Anybody out there have any suggestions besides reinstalling Windows (XP Pro)
