Can't install updates

Buddha

Suddenly I am unable to install any updates successfully. They download OK
(apparently), but then installation consistently fails.

I've followed all the steps that Help recommends (stopping the Update
Service, deleting files, restarting and retrying) several times, with no
success.

Disabling my AV and Windows Firewall have been no help either.

Any suggestions?

Thanx:

Did this occur after a repair install?

Have a look here and see if there is a solution for your situation.

Have you shut down and restarted the computer? Perhaps another install is
still in progress and needs to be completed or aborted.

That site is for XP, and unfortunately, I made the mistake of getting a
system running Vista Home Premium. Do you know of a similar site for Vista?

Did you actually have a look at the link I put in my post?

It's all about Vista update problems

Thanx for the advice. This file, like a lot of other Vista things, refuses
to install and returns a cryptic error message.

With each passing day, I realize more and more what a mistake it was getting
Vista. I've used Windows since its very first release and all versions
since, and I've never seen anything to rival Vista as a disfunctional piece
of garbage. The whole "Mojave" ad campaign seems to show I am far from the
only user who feels as I do. When in its history has MS ever found it
necessary to launch something of this nature in defense of one of its
products?

I'll just accept the fact that Windows Update has flat out quit working on
my system and live with it, at least until I can finally be shut of Vista
and find something that works.

My reply wasn't directed to you, but to another post. I don't know how it
showed up as addressed to you.

Hi Buddha,

The reason I asked was because I had sent you a reply on the same day you
posted your question [27th] but you answered the post from Mick Murphy on
the 28th were you said.

"That site is for XP, and unfortunately, I made the mistake of getting a
system running Vista Home Premium. Do you know of a similar site for
Vista?"

I assumed then that you hadn't even looked at the post I made which had a
link to information to do with Vista machines.

Anyway the main point is have you being able to rectify the situation?

I had a similar situation with a clients machine. It would download all the
updates and then refuse to install them. This happened after a repair
install. To handle it I did another reapir install and made sure I did not
select to update or activate during the repair process. Once the repair had
finished I then did the activation by phone then went online and did the
updates. I then installed only non critical updates first - successfully,
and then installed critical updates last and they all installed. YMMV.
