Can't install update - help!

M

malcolm bevidge

I have Windows XP Pro (SP1) and I need to install an update (Q822603) from
the MS site to fix a compatibility problem with a USB 2 PCI card I have
installed. After downloading the file from this page:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...b9-ebe1-4c5b-9dd4-5c0eb387311e&displaylang=en

I try to launch the update Q822603_XPE_SP2_X86_ENU.EXE and about halfway
through is fails with the error message; "QFE Installer Error - WEUpdate
cannot retrieve information needed for setup from database. Setup cannot
continue."

Without this patch I cannot get my PCI USB 2.0 card (VIA) working with my
scanner. The scanner works fine with my 1.1 ports, but my PC locks up when I
attempts a scan with the scanner in a 2.0 port (the scanner is a USB 2
compatible device, and for high res negative scans USB 2 is a must otherwise
3000+ LPI scans take forever!).

Pleases can someone explain to me the meaning of this error, and is there
some other way to install this patch?

Malcolm.

Has the machine ever been to Windows Update?

To assure a clean and successful install, your anti-virus application should
be disabled and all other running processes closed before going to Windows
Update and when downloading/installing from any MS page.

Hi Malcolm,

From a previous post:

QFE needs to be installed before any new QFE can be applied.
Instructions about this are written on download page.

Thank you for your help.

I always go to Windows update at least once a week. On doing a check there
immediately before I posted this messages I get the following message:
"There are no critical updates available at this time."

Sorry if I'm getting confused here but I am a bit of a newbie at all this.
After reading your post I clocked on the link to download the following:
'Security Update for Windows XP Embedded with SP1 (Q811279)' however upon
trying to install this file (Q811279_XPE_SP2_X86_ENU.exe) I got the exact
same error message as when I tried to install Q822603.

Apologies if I'm doing something really dumb, but in in new territory here!

Thanks for the help so far Kelly.

Windows was already installed on the machine when I bought it, though I do
have the original CD of course. There is a 'part number' on the CD which I
can quote if you think it will help.

When I click on my 'system' icon in Control Panel, I get the following
description of Windows:

System: Microsoft Windows XP Professional Version 2002 Service Pack 1

As I mentioned before, the reason I *think* I need the Windows fix is
because I purchased a PCI USB 2 card (VIA) to use with my new Epson
scanner,. When using the USB 2 card the moment I try to make a scan it
locks up the computer completely. When I use the scanner in my old 1.1
ports it works perfectly, but slow. On posting my problem on a scanner
newsgroup I was told that the Q811279 fix was what I needed.

OK, after much messing about I finally managed to install the updates.

Sadly, this does not seem to have fixed my initial problem, that of my PC
locking up when I attempt to use my scanner. One thing I have noticed
though. Sometimes the computer luck up as soon as I switch the power on on
the scanner, even before I try to loaded the scanner software to make a
scan.

Back to square one...!

So basically if I use USB 2 the PC locks up. If I use USB 1 it's fine.

Malc.
