Can't install Plextor PX-712SA on P4C800-E Deluxe

I'm using Windows XP Pro on a P4C800-E Deluxe Mobo. I've already got a
Raid0 Array set up as my main hard drive along with two IDE Hard
drives set up as Master and Slave on the same IDE connector. On the
secondary IDE connector, I used to have an IDE DVDROM set up as Master
(no Slave) until today when I received a Plextor PX-712SA Internal
SATA DVD+-R/RW, CD-R/RW Drive. I removed the IDE DVDROM and installed
the PX-712SA with its SATA cable plugged into the 7-pin SATA1 Serial
ATA connector.

My BIOS is set up as Enhanced Mode, Support On [S-ATA], Configure
S-ATA as RAID [Yes], but whenever I boot up, the following screen is
briefly displayed:

Intel (R) RAID for Serial ATA-RAID BIOS v3.5.0.3003
Copyright (c) 2003 Intel Corporation. All Rights Reserved.

RAID Volumes:
None defined.

Non-RAID disks:
None Defined.

Press <Ctrl-I> to enter configuration utility..

When Windows XP Pro boots up, the RAID controllers for the RAID Array
are installed appropriately, but Windows can't seem to find a RAID
Controller for what I'm assuming is the PX-712SA because it doesn't
show up in Device Manager (yes, the PX-712SA is powered).

Any thoughts? Am I missing something obvious?

Thanks,
Mark

Have you tried "Configure S-ATA as RAID" [No] ?

On page 2.25 in the manual it is stated that the Promise PDC20376 RAID
controller does not support ATAPI devices such as CD-ROMs, DVD-ROMs, etc

If your plextor is plugged into the Intel SATA connectors, then you will
need to turn off the RAID since you are not using RAID and don't have any
disc drives connected to the Intel controller.

I don't have a P4C800 in front of me, so double check you have the plextor
in the Intel SATA port as some motherboards are not marked too clearly.

IF you are already using the Intel (I assume) South Bridge controller for
your RAID 0 configuration, it can only control 2 SATA devices as I recall.
Any additional SATA devices may need to run out of the Promise controller
and would need the Promise Controller's drivers loaded to enable that SATA
as well as the Promise controller being enabled in BIOS. I am also running
RAID 0 with the same motherboard, but elected to use the IDE version =
PX-712A so I would not have to enable the Promise controller. IF this is
correct, it should be a relatively simple fix. Good luck.

My assumption is the SATA Plextor DVD is connected to the Intel
Southbridge, and you probably don't want the RAID BIOS running
to drive it.

It won't be on the Promise interface, because the manual says
the Promise controller does not support ATAPI devices such as
CD-ROMs, DVD-ROMs, etc. That is, if you believe the manual.

Guess I don't understand how he could have the new SATA Plextor on the South
Bridge IF he already has a pair of SATA HDDs configured as RAID 0--there
would be no other SATA connectors available on the South Bridge Intel
Controller??

Just curious what drives you see if you go into drive management:
START->Right click MY COMPUTER-->MANAGE-->double click STORAGE-->double
click DISK MANAGEMENT (you can right click on any of the drives to look at
their properties).

The reason I am curious what you are seeing there is that I temporarily
slaved an IDE backup drive out of another computer to my new build and
Device Manger could not find it, but Disk Management could.

Paul's point was good that the Intel South Bridge controller is not supposed
to work with SATA optical drives--am not sure about the Promise Controller.

Are you attempting to use the Promise Controller?

Paul, that was the problem. I changed my BIOS setting to "Configure
S-ATA as RAID [No]" and now everything is running fine. Thanks to
everybody else as well.
