P4C800-E Deluxe Intel RAID Problems

Hi,

I installed two Maxtor SATA drives on the Intel RAID SATA connectors
on a P4C800-E Deluxe and set the bios (1016) Onboard IDE Operation
Mode to Enhanced, Enhanced Mode Support on = S-ATA, Configure S-ATA
as RAID = Yes, and Serial ATA BOOTROM = Enabled. The Promise
controller is disabled.

The Intel RAID configuration screen NEVER comes up during POST no
matter what settings I use in the bios. The Intell IAA Raid (latest
version from Intel web site) sees the controller, but will not allow
anything to be set (options greyed out). It does see the Maxtor SATA
drives. Storage Manager sees a single SATA drive as does Partition
Magic 8.01. In Linux (Fedora Core 2T3) it sees two drives, but only
one is expressed and I can't do anything with it. Linux aside, I am
more concerned with WinXP not seeing the Intel RAID setup.

I have a 200G Maxtor on the primary IDE chain as the primary boot
disk with Grub controlling multiple OS's and a 160G maxtor secondary.

Graphics = Radeon 9200
1G DDR
Intel P4 3.0 Prescott

Anyone have any suggestions?

This is a long shot, but do you have any PCI cards or perhaps
something in the Wifi slot ? What happens with all PCI/Wifi
devices removed from the computer ?

The only other thing I can suggest, is flashing back to a previous
BIOS, on the off chance that there is something wrong with 1016.
Did you do a "Load Setup Defaults" in the BIOS, after the
flash upgrade ?

I'm gonna bet you did the same thing I did. Did you put the SATA cables on
the adapters that say SATA_RAID or the other ones that say SATA1,2? The
ones that say SATA_RAID are for the Promise array. The other SATA adapters
are for the Intel array.

I wish...no they were on the right adapters. Top set. Strange thing
is certain distros of linux do see the intel RAID controller when the
BOOTROM is enabled. Just can't get the RAID setup screen to show
during post.

Currently running the SATAs on the Promise controller as basic IDE
drives while I google around for more information.

There is a claim on Abxzone.com, that if using the Intel SATA
interfaces, and selecting RAID, that the Intel BIOS screen
only shows up if there are two drives. There was a guy on
Abxzone who couldn't get the BIOS screen to pop up, just
like you, and he ended up returning the board to Newegg.
His replacement board worked fine, and the BIOS screen
did pop up on the replacement board. So the problem could
be a defective ICH5R Southbridge or a defective SATA cable
etc.

Thanks Paul. That may just be the problem. I did find a reference
to the screen showing only .5 secs. For now I am using the two SATAs
on the Promise controller and really enjoying testing RAID on a
couple of linux distributions. Having too much fun to send the board
back right now.
