Can't Install Partition Magic Version 8 to 8.01 Update Patch

Running Partition Magic version 8. There is an update patch to version
8.01, called pm801.zip, on the Symantec site. It won't install on my
system. After extracting the zip file and running the update.exe file
it gives an error:

"Error 1620: This installation package could not be opened. Contact
the application vendor to verify that this is a valid windows installer
package."

The error pops up after the installshield wizard initializes. Event
viewer shows the Windows Installer installation operation completed
successfully right after the wizard initializes but then clicking ok to
install gives this message.

I have tried installing with a clean boot - all items unchecked in the
startup tab of Msconfig and all non MS services set not to load. I also
tried installing in safe mode and in normal mode without any services or
startup items by using the diagnostic mode from MSconfig. A slightly
different error message pops up but still won't install.

I emailed Symantec tech support. The tech said to try a different
download server and gave an alternate site. That one didn't work
either. I messaged customer service on how to get a CD of the patched
program shipped out, --- waiting for a response from them.

Has anyone successfully patched PM 8 or over come this problem?

System is a P4, 2.53 mhz, 1 GB ram, two WD 120 MB hard drives running XP
Pro SP1a with all patches. No viruses or sypware --- scans done several
times a week with different programs. All other programs run/install
fine. Never had a problem installing till this one.

Sure does work, plus make sure :
When you download the PartitionMagic 8.01 patch, the rescue
diskettes are not updated by default. Update them asap
