Can't Install News Group Reader in Outlook 2003?

J

Jack Barrett

I follow the instructions for adding the news reader when you customize tool
bar in Outlook 2003. When I click Go in the Commands tab there is nothing
that indicates News!
I have tried following the help section step by step and STILL NO News to
drag to the Go section on the tool bar!
Please help!
I need my News Groups!

Thanks,

To get the News command back, go back to the Programs tab in Control Panel |
Internet Options and change the default newsreader to Outlook Express. If
OE prompts you to make it your default newsreader the next time you launch
it, clear the "Always perform this check..." box and then click the No
button.

You may need to reset the Menu Bar and/or restart Outlook and/or reboot your
machine in order to complete the process. Not everyone is reporting success
with this method, but try it and see what happens. If all else fails, you
can always create a desktop shortcut to Outlook Express and include the
/outnews switch -- that gives you the same result as accessing the
newsreader via the News command in Outlook.

Milly:

You and I had an exchange on the identical issue a few weeks back. As here, you gave the same helpful solution. As I noted previously, however, wouldn't it make more sense if Microsoft simply did a better job integrating the newsreader into Outlook?

No, it would not. They have no plans to integrate a newsreader into what is
primarily a business application (client for Microsoft Exchange Server).
And, personally, I hope they do not. I can't imagine having to manage both
mail, groupware, and news in one application.

And people complain about bloat now! Plus, why reinvent the wheel when
there is a perfectly good application that already exists and is free?
