Can't install multiple disk programs

When I try to install any program that contains more than one disk, the first
disk intalls correctly and then when I put the second disk in, the install
completely stops.

This happens with different programs that I have installed successfully on
other computers I own. My hardware seems to be working correctly, and I get
no error messages, just no forward progress on the install on the second disk.

What program and what type of disks are you referring to? It helps to be
specific here.

I'm installing an EA Game "Lord of the Rings" CDs. I also tried installing
the "Sims 2" by EA and the same exact thing happens.

The second CD may not take off automatically. In many cases you have to
press an OK button to continue the install. This button window pops up along
with the notice to insert the next CD.
