Can't install HP3310 all-in-one

I have previously installed my HP3310 all in one printer on my desk top and
two laptops at home.
Recently the installation on my mothership desktop stopped working and after
numerous phone calls to HP I uninstalled and tried reinstalling it but it
refused to reinstall coming up with an 'mdfix01.exe' failure.
I am at my wits end trying to get this to install. HP says it is a MS fault.
Can anyone help me?

I have downloaded the driver package to a memory stick.
Do I install this download to reinstall the entire printer software or do I
start the disc first?

Thanks for your help so far.

got the article, tried it. same result.

spoke to HP tech support in Bangalore for 1/2 an hour and tried all over
again.

They reckon it is a conflict between the printer and a windows update,
somewhere in the registry.

Their only suggestion is to save all my files on the desktop and reinstall
windows, SP2 and then install the printer before any other software.

Seems like a drastic solution.

Does anyone else have a suggestion???
