Can't Install Fonts

Has anyone seen this? I cannot open the fonts folder in Windows 2000 Pro nor
the fonts icon in control panel. From a dos window, I can open the folder,
copy files, etc. This is a new system (Dell pws360) and, I believe I could
initially install fonts, but.......???? This is not unique to Windows 2000,
as I had it happen for a while on a Windows NT 4 workstation (it worked,
then failed, then cured itself????) and the same thing happens on my PC at
home (Windows XP Pro). When it fails, message box appears that says
explorer.exe has failed and must be restarted! It says an error log has been
created, but I have not found it anywhere. MS knowledge base comes up with
nothing that matches.

Don't understand the widespreadness of this, but have you tried TweakUI's
"Repair Font Folder" item in the "Repair" tab? Or perhaps you've got a huge
number of fonts, exceeding the OS's limit (whatever that is - a bit of
surfing will come up with it).

I ha forgotten TweakUI, but it didn't help anyway. I doubt the number of
fonts is an issue as only a half dozen have been added to a new install of
Windows2000 (about the same for the home copy of Windows XP Pro). I would
think the maximum would be well above that number, but appreciate the
thoughts. However, I still find myself up the proverbial creek without a
paddle! I continue to research everyday, but find nothing that applies.

Anybody else have any ideas?
