Can't Install -- Error 1714

I've tried to sanitize both the Registry and files of any MS Antispy /
Defender remnants, but keep getting Error 1714 about 3/4ths of the way
through the installation. Error 1714 says previous version of Windows
Defender can't be removed. Tried to reinstall MS Antispy, but the prompt
says the configuration data is corrupt. Windows Install Clean-Up doesn't
show any previous versions of AntiSpy / Windows Defender. Any help would be
appreciated. Thanks.

Hello Fred,

I will try:

Donload and Install, Windows Installer 3.1 v2 (3.1.4000.2435) is available
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/893803

D/L and install Ccleaner -
http://www.ccleaner.com
http://forum.ccleaner.com/index.php?showtopic=1504
Note, uncheck Yahoos toolbar during install.

Open Ccleaner and start the cleaning, press "Windows" "Aplications" and "Run
Cleaner" from the menu choose 'Issues' and then press scan for issues, Repair
any fºund.

D/L and install Beta 1
From http://www.filehippo.com Beta 1
http://www.filehippo.com/download/88f7471049179318fa98d78e1df25a33/download/

Is pretty risky getting a Microsoft file except directly from the
source--but in an emergency....

REMOVING BETA 1
Whatever you do, (installing and updateting or unistalling) always as a
administrator.

This needs to be run in safe mode.

Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel. Click Microsoft AntiSpyware and
click Change. Click Next, and then click Remove.

In Windows Programs files, delete all the sub-directorys and the folder.

Delete in Windows\system 32 :
GcColetion.dll
Hashlib.dll
GcUnCompress.dll
GcTypLibA.tbl
GcAntiSpywareLib.dll
GcUserData.gcg

Windows\Downloaded Installations, any reference about MSAS.

You can use Ccleaner
Run the above remover in safe mode Ccleaner on all 3 settings(windows, apps
& issues) and clear anything found reboot and see if it still exists.

Done.

WINDOWS DEFENDER BETA 2.
I'd recommend re-downloading, and saving to a known location--like the
desktop.

After the download is complete, disable real-time protection by your
antivirus for long enough to do the installation. This may be worth trying
in your case.
I hope this post is helpful, let us know how it works ºut.

I've a couple of thoughts:

1) I really dislike and mistrust registry editors. However, Microsoft has
one at safety.live.com which might be worth trying.

http://safety.live.com/site/en-US/default.htm

Choose the Full Service Scan, and then click on Customize link, and choose
the scans you want--but include the registry cleaning scan.

Can you make sure that the installation folders--\program files\microsoft
antispyware, and \program files\windows defender are completely removed from
your system?

Additionally--it'd be good to see the error messages you are getting
precisely--word for word.

Before attempting another reinstall, grab the refresh build from here:

Thanks to both you and Bill Sanderson for your help. I've followed your
suggestions, but keep getting the same prompts. I have some kudzu-like
Defender element, probably in the registry, that refuses to take the hint
and leave. I'll probably have to reformat [Excedrin headache 45]. Thanks
again.
