Can't install Access97 after Office 2000 on XP laptop

When I try to install Access97 from the Office97 SR2 CD on a new XP Home
laptop I get the message "Setup has determined that Microsoft Office 97 has
already been installed on several other computers." and Setup quits. In
fact I installed Office 2000 Pro on the laptop, but I also need Access97.
What do I have to do to get Access97 installed?

As there is a conflict when Access97 and MSAccess from
latter versions are installed on the same O/S.

Rename existing MSAccess.exe (in MSOffice folder
(MSAccessXP.exe)
Rename font hatten.tff in the Windows\Fonts folder
(hattensav.ttf)
Install MSAccess 97 into a different folder to the default
(i.e. \MSAccess97\)

DO NOT ATTEMPT TO RUN EITHER MSACCESS AT THIS POINT

Rename the MSAccess of original back to the MSACCESS.exe
name
Rename the font to the original if you do not find that
another hatten.ttf has been installed into the
Windows\Fonts folder.

[This step is only necessary where MSAccess as well as a
later version of MSAccess is installed.]

Note: the procedure differs slightly if you have first
installed MSAccess97.

Thanks..but that is no help. I looked at that KB article, but it doesn't
describe the actual problem I am having. My problem is, I can't get the
Office97 Setup program to run.

The KB article says the best approach is to install 97 first. I thought it
was the reverse (it's been a while since I've had to do this) and I
installed 2000 first. So i de-instaled 2000, deleted the hatten.ttf file,
and deleted the Office registry entry from HKLM/Software/Microsoft. The
Office 97 setup program still will not run.

It looks like you are installing off your hard drive or network?
A97 Setup counts. Go back to the original CD (or even a backup copy
of the Setup), and use that.

Nope...I am using the CD, not any network stuff. It's the same CD I have
used many times before and it has not been damaged.

Look for Offcln97 on your CD. I /think/ it is on most if not
all Office install cd's: it /may/ be used by setup.

AFAIK, it just uses what you see in the matching OPC files,
but the intention is to clean out all office files and registry
entries.

Does that help?

I've got the Offcln97 utility, but it only cleans up Office97 installations,
which I was never able to actually run. DO you think it might clean up
Office 2000? That's a bit if a stretch I think considering it was written
before O2K was developed.

I think david is thinking that your first install attempt
may have left an O97 stub somewhere that's now adding to the
problem.

I suspect you may be reaching the point where you have to
try installing from that CD onto a virgin pc, with NO
network connection, just to prove for certain sure that it
is OK.

I remember someone suggesting using an Acc97 version upgrade
install CD onto a machine with O2000 on was their way around
install prob's. The upgrade CD saw O2k as a valid product
to 'upgrade' (g).

As you, I can't remember what I did myself 'cause it's a
couple of years ago at least.

After that, short of reinstalling everything, I'm not sure
what to suggest... The no longer supported by MS
regclean.exe? Risky...

On the Office 2000 CD, you should find a file named regclean.exe or
ofcln.exe (or something close to those names). Run it (them) after
uninstalling everything that refers to Office and deleting any Office
specific folders.

Install Access 97, then install Office 2000 to a different directory.

Before running Access 2000 for the first time, locate the file: msaccess.srg
in the Access 97 directory structure and rename it to: msaccesssrg.old.
Create a new empty text file in that directory and name it msaccess.srg Now
you can run both without trouble.

Thanks...I thought your suggestion would work, but it didn't. The utility
is called offcln9.exe and it is in the D:\pfiles\msoffice\office folder on
the 2K CD. I remember seeing it before....it takes out a whole bunch of
files left over from Office2K installs. (Thanks for reminding me about it.)

Anyway, I ran it and it deleted 4 MB of stuff. But the O97 program STILL
fails to run for the same reason: "You have installed several
versions....."

I'm thinking I need to restore the PC to it's original configuration and
start over. Such a bummer.

Right...such a bummer. I've never used one of those system restore CD's
before....looks like this might be my first time to try one. Such a
bummer.

I just found out a solution that worked for me:

What I did is:

Copied all the installation files to a folder in my HD (C:\OFFICE97\)

I just made this folder shared, then went to \\(insert-name-of-your-own-pc-here) and executed the installer from the shared folder OFFICE97

Hope you could understand me, pardon for my crappy english
