I posed this in XP Newsgroup for Photos and was kindly redirected here.

I can't insert pictures into Word 2002--not jpg, bmp, tiff, gif anything!
I've tried everything including opening them in Paint and trying to copy and
paste from there. Sometimes they stick for a second of two, or they stick
and I try to save the document and then when I reopen, nothing.

I just moved this copy of Word 2002 to a new desktop pc--entered the
registration key and everything seems to work fine, except the picture thing.
It works just fine on my laptop.

This new pc had a copy of Office 2003, which I don't want, and I thought
maybe the 60 day comp copy of Word 2003 was interfering so I removed all
that. No change.

The program seems to be fully functional otherwise. I have made all kinds
of documents, printed labels and envelopes from it, even printed to pdf files
with pdf995.

Anybody have any ideas? I am not certain I'm in the right place for this
request. If not, would someone please redirect me?

Thank you very much.

Having 'inserted' them in the document, do they appear in print preview or
do they print? If so then either you have tools > options > view > picture
placeholders checked, or your display driver needs updating and/or the
display's hardware acceleration needs reducing.

Word imposes heavy demands on the display driver and some standard drivers
are simply not up to the job. The worst offenders Intel and ATI have drivers
on their web sites to fix the display issue.

Hi Benedict,

If you hold down the control key when starting Word
(Office safe mode) can you use Insert=>Picture from File?

Can you complete a repair/reinstall from the Office XP
(or Word 2002) listing in Add/Remove Programs in the
Windows control panel?

Starting in Safe Mode overcomes the issue. I can place a picture into a Word
document. I can use Insert or drag and drop. What is going on? The Repair
option wants me to reinstall from the CD. I will do that and get back to
you. In the meantime, what is Safe Mode all about?

Print Preview and Print work fine. Print Placeholders is not checked.

I tried the Repair-Reinstall--Windows asked for the CD with Word 2002 on it.
The repaired version will not save an inserted picture. Save As and
reopening the file leads to a blank page, unless I open them into Word that
has been started in Safe Mode. It seems that only Safe Mode works.

Is this some anti-virus security issue or something? I run AVG(free
version). I have XP sp 2 Firewall off because I operate behind a hardware
router firewall. This is goofy! I can't help but think it has something to
do with Works V 8.0 that was preinstalled on my machine, or Office 2003,
approval copy, which I uninstalled because I don't need all that horsepower.

The monitor does have Intel driver--but nothing else seems to be in trouble
and if it works in Safe Mode, why not when I open it normally?

Further to the topic--I have the latest Intel Driver version--even more
up-to-date than the website, which was last updated in 2004. That does not
seem to be an issue in this case.

Hi Benedict,

If safe mode works you could have an interfering
Add-in (Adobe Acrobat or others) running or a
damaged template.

To start, use Start=>Search to remove all files found
with the string
~$*.*;*.tmp
before starting Word
and check in Word in Tools=>Templates and Add-ins
to see if anything is listed there
