Can't import .pst archive into Outlook 2003

Hi there,

A new hire gave me a cd including email archive .pst files from his old
organization that he would like imported into Outlook. When choosing to
import a .pst file we're getting the error "archive.pst is not a personal
folders file." We've tried

- confirming the read-only box is not checked
- creating a separate Outlook Data Folder and trying to import into that
- running scanpst.exe on it, but it didn'st recognize the file

It's about 312 MB in size. It's quite possible his organization had
previous versions of Outlook and later upgraded to 2003; I don't know. Any
advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Hello there,

Thanks for the suggestion, but yes -- I did already run scanpst.exe on it
but it didn't recognize the file, unfortunately.

Have you run scanpst on it yet? You can normally find it in C:\Program
Files\Common Files\System\MSMAPI\1033.

Did that just now but got the same error message as before. Have also just
tried three different programs (Stellar Phoenix Mailbox Pro, Recovery for
Outlook 1.5 and EasyRecovery EmailRepair) but none of them could fix it
either. Any other thoughts?

Thanks!

Copy the pst-file to HD and make sure the "Read Only" file attribute isn't
selected. Then use File-> Open-> Outlook Data File... to connect to it.

Has the pst-file ever been verified to work directly after the burning
process? If the pst-file has been burned while Outlook (process) was still
running he has created a corrupted pst-file. See if you get any results

Hi there,

Was trying to get in to see this response for a while but there seemed to
have been some network downtime for these newsgroups. Anyway, unfortunately
we don't know what they did at the old organization when creating this .pst
file and we can't go back and ask them (according to the person whose data it
is) so I guess we're going to give up on this. Did try the program you'd
recommended but it, too, was unable to recover any data. Alas. Thank you
for the response, however!
