cant hide inactive icons

New Home-xp install, sp2. Have not been able to get the "<" or ">" to show up in the
lower right part of the system tray, so that icons can be hidden under the settings
of hide/show of inactive icons.
I have another pc, that was upgraded from WinMe to xp home, and have appreciate be
able to hide some of these icons that are in the sys tray.
