Can't get Windows Update to work

I got a Trojan virus on my PC a week or so ago - eventually got rid of it -
but it has obviously damaged some files now -

1. I can't get Windows Update to work. Takes me to a blank website
everytime. I did manage to get on the Microsoft Security Updates site and
received the following message
"Files required to use Microsoft Updates are no longer registered or
installed on your PC" - I pressed "Register or reinstall for me now
(recommended)" and I just get a blank screen.
I've run SFC with my XP SP2 disc in the drive in the hope it would sort my
system - but no change.
2. Since removing the virus my MSN Messenger fails to allow me to log in. It
takes at least 10 secs for the log in page to acknowledge I have pressed the
keys and display the letters before giving me "Signing in to MSN Messenger
failed because the service is temporarily unavailable. Please try again.
Now I know the system is available and my firewall is set up correctly.

Do these two problems indicate that some of my files are corrupted/damaged ?
How do I sort this ? Re-install Windows ?
Help!

Let's make sure that your PC is indeed clean !

Download MULTI_AV.EXE from the URL --
http://www.ik-cs.com/programs/virtools/Multi_AV.exe

To use this utility, perform the following...
Execute; Multi_AV.exe { Note: You must use the default folder C:\AV-CLS }
Choose; Unzip
Choose; Close

Execute; C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT
{ or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS }

NOTE: You may have to disable your software FireWall or allow WGET.EXE to go through your
FireWall to allow it to download the needed AV vendor related files.

C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT -- { or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS}
This will bring up the initial menu of choices and should be executed in Normal Mode.
This way all the components can be downloaded from each AV vendor's web site.
The choices are; Sophos, Trend, McAfee, Kaspersky, Exit this menu and Reboot the PC.

You can choose to go to each menu item and just download the needed files or you can
download the files and perform a scan in Normal Mode. Once you have downloaded the files
needed for each scanner you want to use, you should reboot the PC into Safe Mode [F8 key
during boot] and re-run the menu again and choose which scanner you want to run in Safe
Mode. It is suggested to run the scanners in both Safe Mode and Normal Mode.

When the menu is displayed hitting 'H' or 'h' will bring up a more comprehensive PDF help
file. http://www.ik-cs.com/multi-av.htm

I've got the same problem. I followed David Lipman's recommendations and
found that my files are clean. Nothing detected in regular or safe modes
running the virus scanning software. I can get to all web sites, but when I
select windows update I get a blank screen. During one of my searches I also
got taken to the about:blank site. What do I do now?

What AV modules did you run ? At the very minimum, I suggest the McAfee module.

Please download, install and update the following software...

* Ad-aware SE v1.06
http://www.lavasoft.de/
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/

* SpyBot Search and Destroy v1.4
http://security.kolla.de/

After the software is updated, I suggest scanning the system in Safe Mode.

I also suggest downloading, installing and updating BHODemon for any Browser Helper Objects
that may be on the PC.

Sorted !!!!

I ran all the anti-virus programs as suggested - found a couple of little
buggers that are now gone. System is now clean as a whisle.

Then I fixed my windows update and MSN Messenger by doing what someone from
another forum suggested, which is....

Re-registering the MSXML3.DLL
1. Click Start.
2. Choose Run.
3. In the Run box, type: regsvr32 MSXML3.DLL
Press okay

I can now go to Windows Update website and download updates as normal. My
MSN now works as well.

Thanks lads,

I've had a couple computers where that didn't work. I actually register
30 some DLL's in an attempt to fix it, but nothing permitted Windows
Update to display the proper page, and buttons didn't perform their
click action. FireFox worked fine, but IE would not work.

After two days of testing solutions, calling MS and having them tell me
they could not fix it either, I just wiped/reinstalled and it works fine
again.
