Cant get usb hub to work

G

Guest

Hi,

I bought a cheap usb hub on ebay, and I am trying to get it to work on my
computer, but its refuses to be. On my friends pc, it is identified as a
usb2.0 hub, then a generic usb hub, and then the driver installation dialog
pops up. On mine it does not get recognised as a generic hub, and windows
says that it cannot find the right driver.

Can anyone help?

there are issues/conflict between usb 1 and usb 2
your pc port may be the slower one.

I have USB 2.0. The reason I bought the hub was because I have an external
HDD and an optical drive hogging up 2 of my 4 slots, and I have only two more
ports for my flash drive, my printer and my other peripherals.

I thought it was because the hub wasnt getting any power, but it has its own
power supply. I even tried plugging it in the back of my desktop ince case
the front ones werent getting enough power, but it still didnt work.

And windows also just failed to recognise a HP psc 1310 printer. It shows up
psc 1310, and then HP PSC 1310 on my friends laptop, but on mine windows
tries to look for drivers to psc 1310.

Any tips?

might me the physical connections.
the connections are simple and
function as clothes line pins.

is there some activity if you plug them in and out?

check msinfo32 for any conflicts....

do you get the same problem(s) in safe mode?

The device is recognised everytime I plug it in and out, but it refuses to go
to the next step (i.e. be recogised as a Generic USB hub).

How do I check msinfo32? I will try it in safe mode as well.

Thanks for the help!

looks like irq 16 is a problem
go to device manager and the properties for the usb host controller, there
should be a question mark there or something.
then manually configure the irq's by selecting an
available one from the drop down list..

When I look at the properties in device manager, it says that there are no
conflicts. Also, the device itself shows up as normal without any question
marks or warnings.

eventhough the devices
have no problems, you should "find a different irq"
for it anyways because the irq conflicts with your
other device!

the list of solutions is becoming pretty short
and i hope these will help if the above still does not:

a) download from microsoft.com an update for usb's. not sure what
the link is but it helps reconfigure the power for usb. you will recognize
the download/page when you find it.

b) go to start, run
and type msconfig and disable all your startups. after the
issue with the usb is resolved you can reanable them.

c) enable plug n play services in services via admin tools.

d) upon rebooting, get into your cmos and if
you have plug n play option, enable it.

see what you results are with a functional usb
upon entering windows desktop.

if these can't help, i don't have anymore ideas... sorry.
