can't get to task manager

I cannot get the task manager window to appear. Some
background task appears to be taking a significant amount
of cpu time but I can't get the task manager to appear so
I can find out what it is. The ctrl-alt-del key combo
doesn't work neither does right-clicking on the task bar.
Any suggestions?
 
Cleaned up all my viruses but still can't get to Task
Manager. Any other suggestions?
