Task Manager's CPU live icon missing from my Taskbar

I'm having a problem with an application that from time to time decides to
consume all available CPU cycles. When I suspect this is happening, I can
check the Task Manager's Process CPU monitor.

When I use the Task Manager on most XP systems, a live CPU monitor icon
appears in my Taskbar when I minimize the Task Manager. I'd like to use this
CPU icon to keep an eye on the application that's the CPU hog. But the icon
is missing from my current XP Pro system (running in Fusion on Mac OS X).

How can I get the CPU icon to display?

Right-click taskbar, click Properties, click Taskbar tab.

Uncheck "Hide inactive icons"

"The text above that option says: You can keep the notification area
uncluttered by hiding icons that you have not _CLICKED_ recently."

(I have never even thought about clicking my Task Manager icon. :)
