Can't get Start Menu/Task Bar to come up

When I turn on computer (laptop) it goes through the usual
setup log, then WindowsXP screen appears and although
mouse works -- I cannot get my Start Menu of Task Bar to
appear. The log on screen does not appear either. Have
tried f2, f8, f10, and the various rebooting options.
Does anyone know what the computer is doing and how to fix
this??

Pam -- did you ever get a resolution suggestion. I am
having the same problem. When I startup my laptop, it
hangs at the Windows XP Window and does not go to the login
screen. I also do not get my desktop and have tried the
options you mentioned.
