I have been getting

"Updates were unable to be successfully installed"
The following updates were not installed:
Update for Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) 2.0 and WinHTTP
5.1 (KB842773)
when I try to get SP2 after a recent repair of XP Home. I have done this
dozens of times (including the little updates are ready icon at the bottom
of my screen). Apparently the automated update thing at Microsoft will not
give me SP2 and I suspect that these things that won't install require SP2
in order for them to install. What can I do? I tried going to the
professional and developers site and downloading SP2 for network
administrators. In 3 hours (cable internet) I got a 174 meg file
WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU, but it was supposed to be 266 megs and when I
tried to open it I get a message that its not a windows32 executable file.
Also Internet Explorer and Windows explorer give me runtime errors when I
close them. Is this all related?

I think you may have installed some windows updates that needed to be
installed after something else. You should search this group for posts by
Shenan Stanley that relate to downloading and saving microsoft updates to a
CD. Make a CD then go offline (no internet connection) and remove all
microsoft updates from add/remove programs then reinstall them in the order
they need to be installed from the CD.

I'm not sure about this. Its just what I would do. I'm not an expert. I
don't know if the option to remove updates from the add/remove programs list
was an SP2 update or not. There would be a box you could check mark at the
top of the dialogue box...

Also there is a microsoft newsgroup called microsoft.public.windowsupdate
where your more likely to find people knowledgeable about updates than in
this group.
