Can't get RPC/HTTP to work...

M

Michael

I am trying to access my Exchange server from Outlook over
HTTP. I have read the system reqs (Client - Windows XP
SP1, Outlook 2003; Server - Exchange 2003), and tried to
follow the directions in both the Outlook help file and
online.

The help file suggests to create a new Exchange account,
go into "Tools | Email accounts", and modify the Exchange
settings to travel over HTTP. However, when I create a
new Exchange account, it hangs for about 30 seconds, then
gives me an error message:

"The connection to the Microsoft Exchange Server is
unavailable. Outlook must be online or connected to
complete this action."

Outlook then closes, and everytime I restart it, I get the
same error. So it would appear that I cannot follow the
instructions for setting this up.

I thought I could trick it into working by first setting
up a POP account, then once Outlook opened, create another
account (this time Exchange) and set it to HTTP. However,
the HTTP option doesn't seem to exist.

I can access my Exchange server from a web browser, and I
even got it working using MS Entourage on an Apple
Powerbook (Mac OS X), so I am fairly sure that the server
is setup correctly.

I also verified that my copy of the RPC dll file is the
most recent (per kb article 331320) and have performed
a "Windows Update".

Can someone help?

Are you off the internal network when you try to do this? You may need to
use a hosts file with the internal FQDN and external IP.

Yes, I am off of the local network.

I tried adding an entry for the server in the local host
file like you suggested, but with the same result.

Any other ideas?

Nope... all i know it's very hard to get it setup outside the firewall. It's
*so much* easier to set up the profile inside first. It's one reason they
recommend using prf'ss to roll it out.

if oyu are going through a firewall, you may need the rpcproxy configured
for anonymous access, but it's not recommended.
Location: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ Software \ Microsoft \ Rpc \ RpcProxy \
Parameter: AllowAnonymous
Data type: REG_DWORD

BTW: What are "prf'ss"

spell check gone wild. <g>

A prf is a preconfigured profile file used by corporations so users don;t
have to mess with setting up a profile. If you want to learn more about
them, try http://www.slipstick.com/outlook/ol2002/prftips.htm. if you have
access to a system inside the network, you may be able to create one you can
take home or even just export the profile from the registry at work (after
configuring it for RPC/HTTP) - profiles are here:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows
Messaging Subsystem\Profiles
