Can't get rid of program after WinXP crash

A few days ago, my Windows XP Home crashed and I had to shut down using the
power button.

Then, a program (MailWasher Pro) would not operate (icon in the tray
disappeared). When I tried to access it (via the icon on the desktop), all
I got was a small window telling me "MailWasher is running". Couldn't shut
it down, because I couldn't access the program.

Finally, I "uninstalled" it. However, it (MailWasher Pro) is STILL showing
up on my "startup" list (using MSCONFIG).

When I boot, I get a message screen telling me that "Mailwasher" is "out of
index bounds" (or something like that.

How can I clean MailWasher from my system AND from the startup list (I would
like to get a clean re-install of the MailWasher program)?

Thanks,

Chuck

Hi chuck,
You have Orphans left on your system try to download this tool and clean up
all traces left, also try to uncheck the line in the MSCONFIG for it.
http://www.purgeie.com/delinv/index.htm.
Be sure to use it in the right way deleting a file belong to the system will
create more trouble than you already have!.
After all clean run the chkdsk tool on the system and run this command:
Open run and type in: scf /scannow click [OK] and let it run and it will
repair any damaged files/folders on your system be ready with the XP CD if it
prompt you to do so.
HTH.

Thanks a million for the reply, nass. I'm sorry, but I should have included
the fact that I tried (actually a couple of times) to "uncheck the line in
the MSCONFIG list" (and reboot).

I will try the "scf /scannow ". But let me tell you, I am REALLY
nervous!!!. About six months ago, I had a somewhat similar situation, and
I used Windows "Restore" utility in an attempt to get my computer BACK to
its former condition (only a week before!). AFTER using Window's "Restore"
utility, my computer died completely.

The local "Rent a Geek" charged me nearly $500.00 to get my computer up and
running again.

Now, because of my low-level computer expertise, I am in somewhat the same
situation and am PETRIFIED to do much of anything that is the least bit
dangerous.

Anyway, thanks for your suggestions. I will carefully study the suggestions
and proceed with great caution :)

I finally got rid of ALL traces of the program (including from the Startup
menu . . . which was causing me the most problem) by downloading and using a
program called Registry FirstAid. It found and removed four invalid entries
in the registry.

Funny thing is, though, when I re-installed the program MailWasher Pro, it
still will not operate properly, and I STILL get the message "List index out
of bounds (1)" when I tried to use MailWasher.

Oh well. thanks for suggestions.
