can't get Remote desktop to Work

I am not having much luck getting remote desktop working. I enabled remote
desktop in SYSTEM | REMOTE on the XP machine

and I have remote desktop connection running on my WIN 2000 PRO. Both
machines can see other on the network so I know the network is running.

But when I try to browse the network with RDC it can't see anything. When I
type in the computer name (TABLET) in the RDC dialog it says it can't
connect, etc. and that it can't find any terminal services. SO I do I need
something like WINDOWS SERVER running on the XP machine?

The computers are conected via an ADSL hub so they have IP numbers like
10.0.0.48 but even that won't work.

Thanks in advance.

Just out of interest is using Remote desktop the same as using PC anywhere?

Remote Desktop is very much like PC Anywhere, without all the bloat of added software.

You need to turn off the built in Firewall in XP and/or any 3rd party software. If you don't wish to disable your firewall, you must allow TCP connections on port 3389 to get through.

Thanks Doug!

What an easy fix. I have another couple of questions:

1. How do you allow TCP connections via port 3389 (I would like to keep the
firewall going) - but will this make my PC vulnerable if 3389 is open?
I tried this in the TCP IP settings and enabled only port 3389 with the
firewall going and then it wouldn't allow me to use RDC

2. Can a PC boot into DOS and then be able to connect via RDC without
running WINDOWS first?

3. can multiple computers access the "one" computer or is this where you
need business server 2003? I have a second computer that is "connected" via
wireless link but this one for some reason could not connect via RDC (also
win2K) - perhaps it is just a bad connection but it too can normally see the
other computers via the network.. i take it only TCP IP is involved in all
these connections

Thanks again

How you configure the firewall depends on which one you're using. Windows built in? Or 3rd party?

For the Windows firewall, look in Help and Support for Firewall. Basically you need to map the port to the IP address of the computer itself. I can't give you specifics, since I'm running SP2 on all of my computers here, and don't have the same interface you do.

Does your ADSL hub have a built in firewall? If not, you might want to consider purchasing one that does. As long as your careful about what you download and install, and keep your AV software up to date, a hardware firewall will protect you from outside attacks. Then you don't need the internal firewall on your computer.

If your computers were connected through a router, you could forward port
3389 to the internal IP of the machine you wish to reach.
