Can't get past initial Windows XP screen! ACK!

I'm quite the novice, but here's what's happening...

When I start my computer, it goes through its little black screen with the
scrolling lights, then when the windows screen would usually load, I am now
getting a blue screen with a darker blue band at the top and bottom and the
Windows XP logo in the middle. And there it sits. FOREVER.

I've tried going through everything at the F2 command and even shut it down
prematurely to let the safe mode request screen come up, but no matter what
my choice, once it gets to the point that the computer should be "up", I get
the same screen, no matter what.

Does someone out there know what I can do about this, or am I about to lose
everything and have to reload Windows? Is there another option?

I don't believe so.

What will happen if I run the recovery disks? Am I going to lose
everything? Just need to prepare myself mentally here before I have a
nervous breakdown over losing all my work-related stuff. If I could just get
in it ONE MORE TIME to save my files and backup, I'd probably chuck this
thing out the window and just start over, you know?

Forgot to add: I can't even get to a point where I can use an F8 key like it
says in the link you gave (thanks, by the way).

When you start windows you should initually see a black screen then a white
bar goes left to right and then the screen goes blank, at this point you
press the F8 key
and you get a list of options there scoll to Last Known Good Configuration
use that. S

Ignore my last, better depress and hold f8 right after blank black screen
with cursor blinking in left corner
