Can't get out of safe mode

I began having problems with Zone Alarm and Norton 2006 after they played
nicely together for about 4 weeks. I got some help from a Zone A forum and
got that back up. Norton web support links suggested my remaining problem
would be fixed by allowing Norton to do an automated fix via the web. I
created a restore point in XP Pro and proceeded, but at reboot during
start-up my system said there were errors on my C drive that I should allow
Windows to fix. I said OK, and I watched with a sinking feeling as a long
list of fixes flashed by. After that big mistake, my maching will only start
in safe mode. No restore points get it out of safe mode, last good config
doesn't work. and safe mode with networking won't work. I have a usb
duplicate on another drive that I can see and copy to, and I'm working to
ensure all my important data files are duplicated on that drive before I do
anything else. I also can't get to the internet to do anything right now--I
was thinking about trying remote access with a tech person to help, but I'm
unable to access. I run through a 2 wire DSL router on my phone line that
allows networking at home via telephone lines, and I haven't tried to
reinstall the router software yet--I know the drivers I have are old and 2
Wire doesn't support it any more. I might find updates if I can get the
machine back on the web.

Short of trying to use recovery console on my OEM disk, or even worse
reformatting and rebuilding the entire drive, are there any other suggestions
I might try? It's a MicronPC 4 years old and out of warranty, so if I start
over I'll have quite an old XP Pro on the disk and I'll have to go after all
the updates again, along with all my software. For example, would my
duplicate drive (created with Retrospect--but it's a duplicate, not a backup)
have a registry that I could find and copy onto my C drive to see if it's
useable? If yes, where do I find these files?

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. I've redone the entire drive
once already a few years ago, and I'm hoping to avoid the time. One of my
techs at work told me to buy a new computer and forget rebuilding--install my
old C as a second drive in the new machine and then copy the files I want.
Not sure I want to spend the money right now, but would my C drive be
readable if I did that?

Thanks

If win stated there were errors on the C drive, vist the hd manu web site,
download and use their hd checking utility, before you do anything else
